Consult the list of certified translators with the corresponding authority. For example, if a translator says that the Mexico City Supreme Court of Justice has certified them, check the Court Bulletin, which publishes a list of certified translators in different subject areas. And in the case of translators certified by the Federal Judiciary Council, check the Official Federal Gazette on the date the official list is published.

To guarantee the accuracy of the terminology used in the translation as well as the experience of the translator, whose credentials are certified by different authorities, like the Mexico City Supreme Court of Justice or the Federal Judiciary Council according to strict protocols regarding experience and expertise. Sometimes translations need to be certified to fulfill a requirement as part of a legal process. Certification guarantees the translator is knowledgeable in a subject area and the relevant terminology, that they have been vetted by federal or local authorities, as such is the case, and that therefore they are considered expert translators.

A translator that has been recognized, authorized, and certified as an expert in a certain language by an authority, in this case, by the corresponding courts.

A page can have various cuartillas. It depends on the number of words on the page in the original language.

A cuartilla is equal to 200 words translated; meaning, a document may be one page in the original language, but when translated, that page may turn into more “pages” or cuartillas because of the transition from one language to another, or the target language may require a higher number of words.

A stamp that authenticates or certifies a document; for this to be valid, the country must be a member of the Hague Convention of 1961. Documents issued in countries that are not members of the convention do not require an Apostille, but they may require another type of certification or authentication by an official agency to be considered valid in the country where they will be used.

The authority that issued the document issues the apostille in the country of origin.

As a general rule, translators are certified locally and/or federally. A translator certified at the local level is authorized in a particular Mexican state, including Mexico City. A translator certified at the federal level is authorized throughout the country. A locally certified translator can only attest to documents in the state where they are certified. For example, a translator certified by the authorities in Jalisco can only seal documents in that state, while a federal translator is certified by the Federal Judiciary Council and can seal documents anywhere in Mexico.

This is when the expert translator is required to present before an authority (usually the consul at an embassy or an authorized representative for an official agency or institution) and swear an oath declaring to be a translator with a certain number of years of experience and certified by the corresponding court. Attestations are needed for certain legal processes.

This is another type of translation that is based on taking notes while the speaker is talking. When the speaker finishes, the interpreter conveys the message based on their notes. Special equipment may be needed when there are more than 2 people listening to the translation, so as to not fatigue the interpreter’s voice.

A type of translation where interpreters are situated in a booth and their voice is transmitted in real time (while the speaker is talking) to attendees at an event through wired or wireless receivers. This type of translation requires special equipment including microphones, headsets, receivers, booths, etc.

Different authorities have different procedures for apostilles.
